Chapter 1187: Extra Chapter: Ning Gui

Editor: Henyee Translations

Ning Gui learned about Ning Shen’s imprisonment in the lab.

When she received her mother’s call, she was still in a daze. The oppressive mountain she’d always feared had suddenly been lifted.

“Gui, Ning Shen has fallen. He’s in prison now. The Ning and Xiao families lost the battle, and they’re planning to abandon him, choosing a new Family Head. From now on, no one will bully us anymore. We can finally leave the Ning family and live peacefully…”

Mrs. Ning was sobbing with joy.

She remembered the time Ning Shen had unleashed a vicious dog to threaten her and Ning Gui, forcing them to live in constant fear. All these years, Mrs. Ning had dreaded angering Ning Shen, fearing the wrath of this madman.

As she spoke about a new life beyond the Ning family, Ning Gui’s face slowly grew blank.

Ning Shen was locked away, and his obsessive control over her was gone. She should have felt joy–it was the freedom she’d always yearned for but never thought possible.

Yet, a strange feeling crept in.

“Will Brother… Ning Shen die?” Ning Gui asked quietly.

“I don’t know,” Mrs. Ning replied. “Even if he survives, he’ll spend at least a decade in prison. By then, the family will have abandoned him. Without power, he can’t hurt us anymore.”

Oddly, hearing that Ning Shen might live didn’t disappoint her. Instead, she felt an unexpected relief.

Realizing this, a wave of discomfort washed over her, and she felt strangely repulsed by herself.

Ning Shen, that lunatic, had once unleashed a dog on her mother. He had cruelly pushed her friend down the stairs and even threatened to control her life. He was monstrous and deserved whatever punishment awaited him!

If she felt any sympathy for him now, it was probably some twisted remnant of Stockholm Syndrome.

After her experiment, she decided to find Gu Yang to ask if there was any psychological explanation for her reaction.

But during her subsequent experiments, Ning Gui found herself distracted more often than not.

Noticing this, her professor and fellow researchers began to grow concerned.

“Ning Gui, you don’t seem to be yourself lately. Are you feeling overtired?” the professor asked gently.

Ning Gui lowered her gaze. “I’m sorry, Professor. I’ll do my best to refocus.”

In the past, her studies and lab work had always held her full attention. Nothing could pull her out of the zone. But recently, her mind would wander at the slightest thought.

The professor had a high regard for Ning Gui, even planning to mentor her officially in the future. He was patient with his promising student. “You’ve been working tirelessly in the lab for months, and I’ve heard that there were some issues in your family.

“Let’s do this: take a break. Go home, be with your family, and recharge. We researchers have to find balance to do our best work.”

“Thank you, Professor.” Ning Gui didn’t insist on pushing through. She knew her current mindset would only hinder the project. A break to reset might be just what she needed.

Mrs. Ning had been eagerly awaiting her daughter’s return so they could finally move out of the house. Upon hearing Ning Gui had taken a break, she drove over to pick her up immediately.

After returning to the Ning family estate, Ning Gui immediately sensed a shift in the atmosphere.

In his ruthless bid for power, Ning Shen had eliminated his uncles, sidelined his brothers, and even placed their father under house arrest in a sanatorium. But now that Ning Shen was in prison, his loyalists had scattered, and the family elders had released their father, reasserting control over the family.

“Miss Ning Gui,” the butler greeted her with the same deference as always.

Ning Gui replied, “Butler, my mother divorced Family Head Ning. I’m no longer the Ning family’s eldest daughter.”

The butler gave a gentle smile. “I’ll be leaving the Ning family soon myself. I’ve stayed just to wait for you, Miss Ning Gui.”

He handed her a document. “Your brother left this for you.”
