Chapter 979: Huang Fei Doesn’t Make Sense

Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

Huang Fei’s eyes bulged with rage, her face turning a deep shade of purple as she flailed her arms in fury. She was beyond furious, her every movement exuding an overwhelming sense of urgency and anger.

If it weren’t for the passing medical staff intervening, stepping in to block her path, she might have lunged at Gu Zi right then and there. She couldn’t hear a word the child was saying. Su Li, being Gu Zi’s stepson, was naturally going to defend her, but Huang Fei’s son would not be so easily wronged.

Ignoring Su Li completely, Huang Fei continued to yell at Gu Zi, her voice rising in indignation. “I’ve known all along that you’re not a good person! You claim to be our neighbor, yet when I tried to buy pork from you before, you refused! But now you’re feeding my son this filthy, tainted meat! Gu Zi, you’re truly malicious!”

Gu Zi, however, wasn’t fazed by Huang Fei’s outburst. Over the years with Su Shen, she’d learned a thing or two about handling people like Huang Fei. Even if she rushed at her, Gu Zi knew she wouldn’t lose out.

What she feared more, though, was the uncontrolled fury brewing in Su Li. His eyes were bloodshot, his face taut with anger, as he stamped his feet and seemed on the verge of charging.

Gu Zi’s only concern at the moment was to calm him down before he acted on impulse.

She firmly grasped Su Li’s arm, pulling him back to steady him before slowly standing tall. Turning to face Huang Fei, Gu Zi’s voice rang out clear and calm, “You still remember that I didn’t sell you the meat? Look at the way you’re acting now–jumping to conclusions without a second thought. Do you think I’d sell meat to someone like you?”

The crowd that had gathered around began to murmur, casting confused glances at Gu Zi.

One of the nurses, speaking up in a tone that suggested genuine concern, said, “Miss, if you have good pork at home, why wouldn’t you sell it to Mrs. Huang? Times are tough, and as neighbors, shouldn’t we help each other out?”

Others nodded in agreement, and Huang Fei, noticing the shift in public opinion, smirked smugly. She raised an eyebrow at Gu Zi and said to the others, “Everyone here knows that Gu Zi is a selfish, self-serving person.”

But Gu Zi, unaffected by the continued slander, responded with poise. “So, just because I know how to bake cakes and don’t offer to teach you for free, I’m selfish and self-serving? You’re talking about the people in this neighborhood, but you and your circle of friends certainly don’t speak for everyone in the whole district. Do you think you represent all of Jifu New Village?”

She continued, her voice steady and unwavering, “As for the pork in my house–it was bought before the pig plague, and I’ve had it stored in the freezer. It’s for my family, and I wasn’t going to risk it getting mixed up in any rumors. As for the Gao family next door, I gave them some pork because they are reasonable people. I never once worried about them. But as for you, I wouldn’t dare sell it to you. And do you know why? To avoid situations like this!”

Her eyes never left Huang Fei as she spoke, her words cutting through the tension in the air. “You’re accusing me of poisoning your son with pork from my house, yet I haven’t even found a single piece of tainted meat. Even my husband’s Daqing Pig Farm would never provide any questionable pork. I’m supposed to risk ruining my reputation and my own brand just to get back at you? That’s a ridiculous thing to even consider. Only someone like you could come up with such an idea of revenge.”

Gu Zi’s voice was clear and ringing with truth, and the people around her could see it for themselves: Huang Fei had no proof, no evidence, just baseless accusations. What’s more, they didn’t expect this composed, elegant woman to be the owner of the very Daqing Pig Farm–the one that had managed to steer clear of the pig plague during the entire crisis. In fact, Daqing Pig Farm was now a local legend.

The entire Southeast region knew of Daqing Pig Farm, the only one that had managed to remain unaffected by the outbreak, and now it provided trusted pork for various government departments, saving a significant amount of money by not relying on imports from the North.

Daqing Pig Farm’s owner, Mr. Su, had even earned a reputation for his social responsibility. When the outbreak first began, while other pig farm owners raised their prices outrageously, Mr. Su only raised his prices slightly, ensuring the public didn’t have to pay exorbitant amounts for meat.

Though the crisis worsened, and most of the pork from Daqing was requisitioned by the government, there was still some available for the market. Lines began forming early every morning just to buy Daqing’s pork. If you were early, you’d get some; if you came too late, it was sold out, and sometimes people went without meat for days. Yet, the people were grateful for Mr. Su’s efforts.

Mr. Su, with his good heart, had a beautiful, young wife–Gu Zi, who, with her calm demeanor, radiated warmth and grace. It was impossible to see her as the malicious person Huang Fei described.

In fact, Gu Zi had given pork to the Gao family but was hesitant to sell it to Huang Fei. Now, it was clear who the real troublemaker was.

The nurse’s face hardened as she turned to Huang Fei. “Mrs. Huang, I saw just a moment ago–Miss Gu was the one who brought your son to the hospital. You claim she harmed him, but where’s your evidence?”
