Chapter 965: Xu Sheng Looks Like Xu Ye

Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

Gu Zi could tell that if this had been the old Su Jing, the argument with Huang Fei would have escalated into a full-blown fight.

Su Jing had every reason to be upset; Huang Fei had an uncanny knack for stirring up trouble. While Gu Zi wasn’t easily ruffled, she still preferred to steer clear of Huang Fei whenever possible. But the woman just wouldn’t stay away.

This time, Huang Fei had the audacity to demand Gu Zi’s cake recipe–just like that, without any preamble.

Gu Zi turned to Su Jing with a sigh. “She’s our new neighbor, Huang Fei. Quite the busybody, as you’ve noticed. If she shows up again, just send her packing. Don’t bother being polite.”

Su Jing, reassured by her sister-in-law’s support, visibly relaxed. Her mood lifted, though she frowned, recalling something odd. “You know, she brought a child with her. And for some reason, the moment I saw that kid, I felt he looked familiar. But I’m certain I’ve never met him before.”

Gu Zi considered this. “Maybe he reminds you of someone you used to know. That happens. Huang Fei and her son came from the capital. Her husband’s surname is Xu, and the boy’s name is Xu Sheng. He’s in the same class as Su Bing now–quite the little prodigy. Skipped grades and already in the fourth year.”

Su Jing’s attention snapped back to one detail. “Her husband’s surname is Xu?” she repeated, her voice tinged with disbelief.

Before Gu Zi could answer, Su Li chimed in enthusiastically. “Yep! Definitely Xu! Xu Sheng’s in our school too, so there’s no mistake!”

Gu Zi noticed the peculiar intensity in Su Jing’s expression and asked cautiously, “What is it? Did something come to mind?”

Su Jing took a deep breath and said, “Su Li, take Lele and Gao Ming outside to play for a bit. Auntie needs to talk to your mom about something.”

Su Li nodded obediently, understanding that adults had their own secrets, much like he and Gao Ming had theirs.

Once the children were out and Su Bing safely ensconced upstairs with his books, Su Jing leaned closer. “Sister-in-law, did my brother ever tell you about my sister, Su Mo? The man who abandoned her–his name was Xu Ye. He was a soldier. And now I realize why that boy, Xu Sheng, looked familiar. He’s the spitting image of Xu Ye!”

She grew more animated, her voice trembling with anger. “And it’s not just Xu Sheng. Look closely, sister-in-law. From the nose down, that boy looks exactly like Su Bing, Su Li, and Su Le. It’s like they were all cut from the same mold! Tell me–do you know Xu Sheng’s father’s full name? Is it Xu Ye? If it is, I swear, I’ll find a knife and deal with that scumbag myself!”

Gu Zi froze, her mind racing. She replayed the children’s faces in her head, comparing Xu Sheng to the three Su siblings. The resemblance was uncanny–so obvious she wondered how she hadn’t noticed it before.

And then there was the matter of their intelligence. Both Su Bing and Su Le were exceptionally bright, and Xu Sheng was no different. Could there truly be a connection between Xu Sheng and her three children?

Her memory flashed to a visit from some supposed relatives claiming to be the Su children’s “real family.” That had been a startling episode.

The visitors hadn’t shown their faces but had sent an emissary with an air of undeniable authority, clearly people of influence. Su Shen had investigated and discovered they were linked to the capital–just like Huang Fei’s family.

But finding information about Huang Fei’s husband had proven difficult, eerily reminiscent of the shadowy background Xu Ye once had. If Xu Sheng’s father truly was Xu Ye, then his reappearance now wasn’t a coincidence. He had to have an agenda, and it involved her family.

The implications hit her like a tidal wave. Was Huang Fei’s persistent interference part of a larger scheme?

But something didn’t add up. Huang Fei didn’t seem hostile toward the three Su children. Her constant bragging about her son felt more like a competitive streak than genuine malice. Most of her venom seemed directed at Gu Zi herself, not the kids.

Gu Zi’s thoughts spiraled, but she forced herself to focus.

Right now, Su Jing needed her support. Grasping Su Jing’s hands, she said firmly, “Calm down. I don’t know for sure what Huang Fei’s husband’s name is, only that his surname is Xu. I’ve never seen him. But you’re right–we need to get to the bottom of this.”

If Xu Ye truly was Xu Sheng’s father, the Su family deserved answers.

Whether or not the man intended to take responsibility for his actions, he had come too close for them to ignore.

Su Mo’s death, the years of suffering endured by Su Bing and the others–these weren’t wounds that could be left unaddressed.
