Chapter 1059: Still Believed She Kept Her Distance

As Gu Zi’s thoughts drifted, more visitors arrived at Xu Sheng’s hospital room. This time, it was the police, dispatched from the local bureau, currently engaged in a hushed conversation with Xu Sheng’s father.

Gu Zi, from where she stood, could make out their words. The officer leading the exchange, though accustomed to authority, softened his tone considerably in the presence of this man from the capital, speaking with visible deference.

“Sir, if you wish to file a complaint against your wife, we can process it immediately. Just say the word, and we will take care of the matter.”

The man did not respond right away. Instead, his gaze drifted toward the hospital bed where Xu Sheng lay. A moment passed before he finally spoke. “Follow the legal procedures. No need to circumvent the rules.”

Huang Fei had exercised a degree of restraint while still in the capital, but here, in an unfamiliar city where no one knew her past, she had allowed her true nature to run unchecked. Reckless and entitled, she had acted as if the law did not apply to her. After all, with her status, she had likely assumed that even if she got into trouble, she would never truly suffer any consequences.

But perhaps this incident wasn’t entirely unfortunate. If anything, it might serve as a much-needed lesson for her–and for Xu Sheng as well.

If Huang Fei continued down this path of reckless destruction, the family itself would be in shambles. When that day came, he would have no choice but to divorce Huang Fei, severing whatever lingering ties remained.

As for Xu Sheng, if his mother could no longer be there for him, the Xu family would certainly make their own arrangements.

With that, the man reached for the door and ushered the two officers outside. Whatever he intended to discuss next, it was clear he had no intention of letting others overhear.

Gu Zi wasn’t particularly curious about what he planned to say–it was nothing she couldn’t guess. Most likely, he was ensuring that Huang Fei wouldn’t be treated too harshly in custody. After all, when dealing with someone of his status, the police had little choice but to tread carefully.

In the end, there were always those who upheld justice, like Captain He, but there were also those who feared offending the powerful.

The evidence against Huang Fei and the Education Daily was irrefutable; there was no room for appeal. And yet, the police had still sent representatives to ask for his decision. Clearly, they were wary of who he was.

What surprised Gu Zi, however, was that he had chosen not to intervene on Huang Fei’s behalf. Instead, he had allowed the case to proceed to trial. It seemed his patience with his wife had long worn thin, and whatever remained of their marriage was likely nothing more than an empty formality.

Now, Gu Zi could understand why Huang Fei had turned out the way she had–so paranoid, so unhinged. Part of it was undoubtedly her own twisted mindset, but being married to a man like that couldn’t have helped either. A husband who believed all their problems stemmed from his wife? That was bound to breed resentment.

By contrast, Gu Zi’s own husband was practically a saint. The thought made her smirk. At least her man never said things like, “Raising children and running the household are a woman’s responsibility.”

Feeling rather pleased, she waited for Su Li and Gao Ming to finish their visit with Xu Sheng before gathering the children to leave.

Xu Sheng’s father, ever the gentleman, personally escorted them out. He even went so far as to open the car door for Gu Zi before taking a step back.

She thought nothing of it. Having lived in the capital in her past life, she understood that men from there placed great importance on etiquette. Looking after women in public was simply the norm.

From a different perspective, though, it could come across as something else entirely.

And in the next moment, a familiar figure emerged–Su Shen, appearing seemingly out of nowhere. His voice was calm but firm. “No need to see us off.”

With that, he slid into the car. Gu Zi’s lips curved slightly as she glanced at her husband sitting in the passenger seat. With a subtle smile, she started the engine and pulled away from the hospital. Only after a while did she ask, “What are you doing at the hospital?”

Loosening his tie, Su Shen didn’t bother to conceal the truth. “I was at a business dinner. Aunt Gao mentioned you brought the kids to see Xu Sheng, so I decided to come pick you up. Besides, I did some digging–the Xu guy is a notorious womanizer. There’s never a shortage of women around him. I wasn’t about to let you deal with him alone. He’s too calculating.”

Gu Zi laughed at that. This man–he truly couldn’t sit still when it came to her.

She had noticed this pattern by now. Whenever it involved her, he simply couldn’t relax.

With an air of nonchalance, she reassured him, “Relax. I have the best husband in the world. Why would I even look at him? By the way, the trial is tomorrow, right?”

Su Shen nodded. “Yes. Education Daily has already recalled all copies of the problematic newspaper and issued a formal apology. They even published a correction in their latest edition to clear your name. The papers should be out by now.”

As they passed by the newsstand near their neighborhood, Gu Zi pulled over and got out to buy a copy.

Sure enough, the apology statement was printed prominently, worded so meticulously that even those completely unaware of the situation could tell who had been in the wrong.

Satisfied, she folded the paper neatly and turned to Su Shen. “Honey, thanks for the hard work.”

He didn’t say anything right away. Instead, after a moment, he reached out and gently stroked her cheek. “Are you seriously being polite with me? Let’s go home.”

Gu Zi knew he wasn’t the type to bring it up, but she had already figured it out. The endless socializing, the exhausting string of business dinners–he had endured them all just to ensure that the retraction and apology would be published without interference. And yet, this man still believed she kept him at a distance.
